Why one network should be several
Explained without jargon, because this is a decision an office manager should be able to weigh.
Everything on a single flat network can, in principle, reach everything else. A guest phone on the waiting-room Wi-Fi is on the same network as the workstation holding patient records. A camera recorder running firmware nobody has updated in three years sits alongside the server.
Segmentation separates that traffic into distinct networks: clinical and business systems in one, guest access in another, IoT and cameras in a third, phones in a fourth. Nothing crosses between them except what is deliberately allowed. It costs very little when designed in and a great deal to retrofit, and it is the single change that most reduces how far an incident can spread.
What internet failover can and cannot promise
A second internet path — a different provider, or cellular backup — means that when the primary circuit fails, the firewall can move traffic across automatically and the organization keeps working. For a practice that cannot check in patients or reach a cloud EHR without connectivity, that is often the highest-value resilience spend available.
What we will not tell you is that it guarantees zero downtime. Failover takes a moment, some sessions drop, and a backup circuit is usually slower than the primary. It turns an outage into an inconvenience. That is a worthwhile difference, and it is the honest version of the claim.
