Someone should be watching this before it breaks.
Break-fix IT means you find the problem first. Managed IT means we do — and most of what would have been an outage becomes a ticket nobody outside our team ever sees.
What this actually covers
- 24/7 monitoring of servers, network equipment, workstations and backups
- Patch management on a tested schedule, with a window that suits your business
- A written asset inventory kept current — what you own, how old it is, when it needs replacing
- Documented environment, so any of our engineers can help without starting from scratch
- Quarterly review of what broke, what is aging, and what is worth spending on next year
- Vendor management — we deal with your line-of-business software vendors directly
What proactive actually means
A disk at 91% capacity is a ticket on Tuesday. The same disk at 100% on Friday afternoon is an outage, a weekend, and a recovery. Almost all of what we do is moving events from the second category into the first. It is unglamorous and it is where the value is.
A plan, not just a service
Most businesses have no idea which of their systems is closest to failing or what next year's technology spend should be. Part of managed IT is a rolling picture of the environment's age and risk, so replacement is budgeted rather than triggered by a failure at the worst possible moment.
What actually comes through on a normal day
Three real situations, and what happens on our side when they land.
“The system won’t load”
A clinical or line-of-business application slows to a crawl with a full schedule booked. Monitoring has usually flagged the cause before the call — a saturated circuit, a failing disk, a server under memory pressure — so the conversation starts with a cause rather than a question.
“That email looked real”
Someone reports a message that asked them to log in or change payment details. We check whether anyone clicked, whether credentials were entered, whether the account shows unusual sign-ins, and lock things down if needed. The fast report is what limits the damage, so we never make reporting uncomfortable.
“We need this documented”
An auditor, an insurer or a new compliance officer asks for evidence — the risk assessment, the backup test, the list of who has access. Because we document as we go, this is a retrieval task rather than a scramble.
None of these are unusual. They are an ordinary week, and they are the reason proactive management costs less than break-fix over any real span of time — most of what would have been an outage becomes a ticket nobody outside our team hears about.
Common questions
What is the difference between managed IT and break-fix?
Break-fix bills you when something goes wrong, which quietly aligns your provider's revenue with your downtime. Managed IT is a flat monthly fee to keep things working, which aligns it the other way.
The practical difference is that a managed environment gets monitored, patched and documented continuously rather than touched only in a crisis.
Do you replace our internal IT person?
Usually not. More often we work alongside them — taking on monitoring, patching, after-hours coverage and the specialist work, so an internal person can focus on the systems specific to your business rather than being on call for everything.
How is it priced?
Typically per user or per device, monthly. What matters more than the model is what is included and what is billed extra — ask any provider to be specific about after-hours work, on-site visits and project work before you compare numbers.
Let’s talk about your environment
A short conversation is usually enough to tell whether we are a good fit — and we will say so if we are not.
